Dear Parishioners,
We mourn the loss of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Pope Francis shepherded the Church from the Chair of St. Peter for 12 years (2013-2025). During this Easter season, we are comforted in our grief by the promise of Resurrection. Let us pray for Our Holy Father that he may rest in peace with the Risen Christ.
In 2019, I had the great honor of meeting Pope Francis when I accompanied Bishop Hying to a meeting with the Holy Father. Every five years, each bishop from around the world travels with other bishops from his region to have an audience with the Pope to update him on the local church in his diocese. Many bishops will bring seminarians studying in Rome to greet the Holy Father before beginning their meeting. Pope Francis was very gracious to greet each of us and present us with a rosary.
As Catholics, we believe in the charism of the Holy Spirit that is given to each and every Pope throughout the history of the Church. This grace of the Holy Spirit was established by Jesus Himself when He appointed St. Peter as the first shepherd of the Church on earth. Throughout the Bible, it is clear that God has always chosen a single shepherd to bring about His divine plan of salvation for the world. We can think of Noah, Abraham, Moses, King David, and finally St. Peter. This relationship between God and His chosen people is meant to reflect our cooperation with God’s plan of redemption. Our communion with the Pope and the bishops of the world is intricate to salvation. The leader of God’s people is tasked with proclaiming the message of the Gospel. The Pope proclaims to the world that Jesus is the Savior of the human race and that the commands of Jesus are the true path to freedom and eternal life. Let us keep Pope Francis in our prayers during this beautiful Easter season. Let us also pray, with great devotion, for our next Pope. He will be asked by God, as we all are, to proclaim Jesus to a world filled with chaos, violence, and despair. Jesus is always the answer and the next shepherd of the Church will seek out the lost sheep while caring for, and protecting, the sheep already in the flock.
Bishop Hying will be celebrating a Mass for Pope Francis on Saturday, April 26, the day of the Holy Father’s funeral in Rome, at 1:00 P.M. at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Madison. All are invited to attend. In Janesville, we will celebrate a funeral Mass for Pope Francis on Monday, April 28, at 5:00 P.M. at St. John Vianney.

Estimados feligreses: Lamentamos la pérdida de nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco. El Papa Francisco guió la Iglesia desde la Cátedra de San Pedro durante 12 años (2013-2025). Durante este tiempo de Pascua, nos consuela en nuestro dolor la promesa de la Resurrección. Oremos por nuestro Santo Padre para que descanse en paz con Cristo Resucitado.
En 2019, tuve el gran honor de conocer al Papa Francisco cuando acompañé al Obispo Hying a una reunión con el Santo Padre. Cada 5 años, cada obispo de todo el mundo viaja con otros obispos de su región para tener una audiencia con el Papa y ponerlo al día sobre la situación de la iglesia local en su diócesis. Muchos obispos traen a seminaristas que estudian en Roma para saludar al Santo Padre antes de comenzar su reunión. El Papa Francisco tuvo la amabilidad de saludarnos a cada uno de nosotros y entregarnos un rosario.
Como católicos, creemos en el carisma del Espíritu Santo que se da a todos y cada uno de los Papas a lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia. Esta gracia del Espíritu Santo fue establecida por el propio Jesús al nombrar a San Pedro como el primer pastor de la Iglesia en la tierra. A lo largo de la Biblia, es evidente que Dios siempre ha elegido a un solo pastor para llevar a cabo su plan divino de salvación para el mundo. Podemos pensar en Noé, Abraham, Moisés, el rey David y, finalmente, San Pedro. Esta relación entre Dios y su pueblo elegido pretende reflejar nuestra cooperación con el plan divino de redención. Nuestra comunión con el Papa y los obispos del mundo es fundamental para la salvación. El líder del pueblo de Dios tiene la tarea de proclamar el mensaje del Evangelio. El Papa proclama al mundo que Jesús es el salvador de la humanidad y que sus mandamientos son el verdadero camino hacia la libertad y la vida eterna. Mantengamos al Papa Francisco presente en nuestras oraciones durante este hermoso tiempo de Pascua. Oremos también, con gran devoción, por nuestro próximo Papa. Dios le pedirá, como a todos nosotros, que proclame a Jesús en un mundo lleno de caos, violencia y desesperación. Jesús siempre es la respuesta, y el próximo pastor de la Iglesia buscará a la oveja perdida, cuidando y protegiendo a las que ya están en el rebaño.
El Obispo Hying celebrará una misa por el Papa Francisco el sábado 26 de abril, día del funeral del Santo Padre en Roma, a la 1:00 p. m. en la iglesia Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz en Madison.
Aquí en Janesville, celebraremos una misa funeral por el Papa Francisco el lunes 28 de abril a las 5:00 p. m. en la iglesia de San Juan Vianney.
